Clean Energy Market Strategy Intern

The Bekenstein intern at Heatmap will play a key role in the scaling of Heatmap Pro, the Heatmap’s data and analytics platform to support the scaling of renewable energy development. The intern will lead market research for a new customer segment, to help with the growth of clean energy in the United States and to combat the spread of climate disinformation. This internship will require a mix of virtual interviews, desktop research, and potential attendance of in-person events. In addition to the internship project, the intern will have exposure to Heatmap’s leadership and editorial operations, and the opportunity to engage with a broad range of topics around clean energy and decarbonization. The internship will culminate with a presentation to the senior leadership of Heatmap for a market strategy for a new vertical for Heatmap Pro.

Core responsibilities:

  • Leverage company strategy to ideate where Heatmap Pro has an opportunity to provide valuable support and insights
  • Monitor external trends affecting the scaling of clean energy
  • Perform literature reviews, and structure research using large data sets (both proprietary and publicly available sources)
  • Draft and edit long-form and short-form written research materials
  • Coordinate with internal teams on cross-functional projects

Qualifications

  • Self-driven individual who is excited to take ownership of an impactful project, move quickly, and thrive with limited direct supervision
  • Flexible team player, able to consistently exercise sound, resourceful and the able to collaborate proactively with other functions
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge or interest in renewable energy development or finance (preferred)

Timeline

Weeks 1-2: Onboarding

  • Introduction to Heatmap, Heatmap Pro and team
  • Meet key team members
  • Define the internship objectives, timeline, and deliverables
  • Develop a research plan for identifying potential new customer segments

Weeks 3-7: Research and Data Collection

  • Schedule and conduct interviews with potential customers, contacts in market segment
  • Conduct desktop research to identify trends and gaps in US renewable energy ecosystem
  • Attend relevant in-person events to gather insights (when possible)

Weeks 8-10: Analysis and Strategy Development

  • Analyze research data to evaluate new market opportunities
  • Develop profiles for top market segments and identify key needs
  • Draft strategic recommendations, including actionable next steps
  • Create and refine the draft presentation for feedback from mentors and leadership

Weeks 11-12: Presentation

  • Finalize the market strategy presentation
  • Practice delivering the presentation to the team for feedback
  • Present the final strategy to Heatmap senior leadership
  • Reflect on outcomes and discuss next steps for Heatmap Pro

Launched in 2023, Heatmap has quickly grown to be one of the leading voices in the climate news landscape, recognized as AdWeek’s Hottest Sustainability Media Company of 2024. Heatmap now features a newsroom of 14+ full-time reporters, including veterans of The Atlantic, Axios, Bloomberg, Grist, and more. Last year, Heatmap launched Heatmap Pro, a predictive analytics platform to address a growing challenge of misinformation and local opposition to clean energy. The platform helps leading energy developers, investors, and advocates understand local sentiments to mitigate risk and build support for clean energy.
